The pitch.

Wang Chung's is the karaoke bar that locals actually go to. It's in the lobby of the Stay Hotel on Koa, the room is Asian-pop-kitsch, owner Dan Chang knows the regulars by name, and the food β€” Chicken Wangs, Yaasss Daddy Burger, kalua-pig tachos β€” punches way above karaoke-bar weight. Order a Ho-Chi-tini, queue up your song, and stay for Music Bingo Wednesday or Sunday's half-off Industry Night. It's the friendliest open-mic in the state, and there's a reason.

What it actually is.

Wang Chung's has been Waikiki's open-mic karaoke institution for over a decade β€” relocated from Pacific Beach Hotel to the lobby of the Stay Hotel Waikiki on Koa Avenue. The room is Asian-pop-art kitschy, low-lit, with one main karaoke stage and a smaller "Red Room" private karaoke lounge for parties. It's the bar Hawaii News Now and Honolulu Magazine consistently cite as the friendliest karaoke bar in the state, and it's the Waikiki anchor of the LGBTQ+ scene alongside Bacchus, In Between, and Tapa's. The food, built by Chang and chef Randy Sanchez, is Asian-Latin-fusion bar food β€” much better than most karaoke bars deserve.
