The pitch.

Climb one flight of stairs off Kalakaua and you're suddenly on a wide-open lanai with Diamond Head on your left, Kuhio Beach surf below, and sports on the TV behind the bar. Lulu's is the Waikiki bar for people who don't want a resort experience — you can show up sandy, you can eat well for under $20, you can stay until 2 AM on a Monday, and the live music is good. Not fancy, not trying to be.

What it actually is.

Lulu's sits on the 2nd floor across Kalakaua from Kuhio Beach. The entire ocean-side wall is open-air, with railing seating that looks straight onto the surf, the beach park, and Diamond Head down the coast. It is unapologetically a surf bar: weathered wood, surfboards on the walls, big TVs over the bar, dive-bar lighting at night, breezy and loud. Daytime brings beach-day refugees in damp boardshorts ordering Lava Flows and the Lulu Moco; nighttime brings a younger, drinkier crowd for the late happy hour and live music.

The drinks worth ordering.

🍴 THE FOOD

And if you're eating.

Happy hour: what to get.

$9 late-night happy-hour Mai Tai paired with pulled pork sliders. Best dollars-to-Diamond-Head-view ratio in Waikiki.

— The happy-hour move

Outside happy hour, it's known for…

Open-air 2nd-floor ocean view across from Kuhio Beach, Magnum P.I. Burger, late-night menu, Taco Tuesday.

Best time to actually go.

Late afternoon (3-4 PM) for happy hour into golden-hour view, then double-dip into the 9 PM late happy hour if you stay.

🤙 INSIDER TIPS

What locals know.

Sit at the railing on the Kalakaua side

That's the view you came for

Late happy hour 9-11:30 PM is the actual deal

Afternoon is decent but not memorable

Taco Tuesday is genuinely a discount

Not theater

Monday until 2 AM

Only Waikiki bar open after most of Kalakaua shuts down

Stairs only

Not elevator-accessible — verify if mobility is a concern

🎵 MUSIC & SCHEDULE

When the music's on.

Live local music most nights (acoustic, Hawaiian, surf-rock covers). Sports on big screens throughout.

⚖️ THE HONEST READ

What people love & what they don't.

Pulled from Yelp, TripAdvisor, Google, and local Hawaii blogs. We don't sugar-coat.

✓ What they love

  • "Best view in Waikiki for the money"
  • Burger and tacos punch above bar-food expectations
  • Live music is genuinely good — not piped tourist muzak
  • Late-night option in a neighborhood that mostly closes at 10 PM

✗ What they don't

  • Gets loud when sports are on — TVs are inescapable
  • Service slow at peak; ordering at the bar is faster
  • "Pricey for what it is" — Waikiki markup still applies
